104. The Role of Unconscious Motives in the Clinical Picture of Neuroses. A. M. Svyadoshch
3rd Psychiatric Clinic, Leningrad
Summary
The role of unconscious real (not infantile-sexual) motives in the genesis of obsessions, phobias and hysteric symptoms in neurotic patients is demonstrated on the basis of clinical observations. The mechanism of the formation of the symptoms which reflect psychotraumatic experiences in a masked, symbolic way is identified. A description is given of the analytical, causal psychotherapy based on the identification of these experiences and rendering them conscious by the patient. The merits of S. Freud in analyzing certain neurotic symptoms as well as in proposing the principle of analytical psychotherapy are noted. The infantile-sexual theory of the genesis of neuroses and psychoanalysis as a method of their treatment is rejected.
