139. Concerning the Similarity of Pathological Paintings to Modern Decadent Art. E. A. Vachnadze
The D. N. Uznadze Institute of Psychology. Georgian Academy of Sciences, Tbilisi, USSR
Summary
The question has been posed in modern psychology concerning the interrelationship of the paintings of mental patients and decadent art.
In this connection the author has attempted to examine the question of the relation of the paintings of schizophrenic patients with surrealistic art, the approach being based on D. Uznadze's concept of the psychology of set involving the two planes of mental activity. As a result of an analysis of the works of surrealist art and an experimental study of art students the author has tried to show that the schizophrenic executes the "surrealist's ideal" directly on the plane of set. The surrealist artist deliberately creates an artistic work on the plane of objectification.
